Lovable is the core platform to start with when product polish matters as much as speed. Its design defaults remain a major advantage for customer-facing SaaS products, startup MVPs, professional sites and tools that need to earn trust on the first screen. It now pairs that visual strength with a much broader product than the older “React frontend over Supabase” description suggests.
Lovable offers two real backend paths. Lovable Cloud provides a built-in database, authentication, storage, Edge Functions, jobs, logs, regions and AI without requiring a separate infrastructure account. Supabase remains an alternative when its ecosystem or independent backend is the better fit. Code mode, download, two-way GitHub and GitLab sync, local development and external hosting make developer handoff a genuine strength, although moving away from Lovable Cloud still means replacing or migrating the services the app uses.
The honest limitations are operational rather than “no backend.” New Lovable Cloud projects no longer receive separate Test and Live environments, so serious teams need another strategy for isolated test data and release confidence. Complex custom logic can still require careful iteration, credit use varies by task, and no first-party path for packaging the generated app as a native iOS or Android store binary was identified in the reviewed documentation. Lovable is flexible, but flexibility introduces decisions that Base44 often hides.
