Shopify vs Base44 vs Lovable: Where Should You Sell Online?
If you sell physical products at volume, keep Shopify as your commerce engine. If you sell services, deposits, bookings, digital products or a small catalogue, build with Base44 or Lovable instead. This is the one matchup in our series where the established platform still wins a big category, and it's worth being precise about why. Shopify's strength isn't its page builder. It's everything behind the checkout: payments, inventory, shipping, taxes, returns and a huge app ecosystem. That's very hard to rebuild well.
Shopify is also not standing still on AI. Its Winter 2026 release lets its Sidekick assistant build custom apps, edit themes and set up automations. But the direction we bet on still applies to the part you design: with Lovable's Shopify integration you can describe a custom storefront in plain language while Shopify runs checkout. And for businesses whose "store" is really bookings, quotes or digital products, Base44 and Lovable do the whole job without Shopify's plan and payment fees.
Key takeaways
- Physical products at volume → Shopify for the commerce engine. Shopify Basic is $29/month on annual billing ($39 monthly), plus payment fees.
- Services, deposits, bookings, digital products → Base44 or Lovable. Base44 connects Stripe on its Builder plan; Lovable has built-in payments for digital products on Pro.
- Want a custom-designed store on Shopify? → Lovable. Its Shopify integration builds the storefront from your description, and checkout runs on Shopify.
- Shopify is the AI-forward incumbent. Unlike most traditional platforms, it's pushing AI hard: Sidekick, an AI store builder, and selling inside ChatGPT, Copilot and Perplexity.
- Don't rebuild commerce for its own sake. Inventory, shipping rules and tax calculation are where home-built stores break.

When Shopify is the right call
- You ship physical products. Stock levels, variants, shipping rates by zone, labels, returns and tax rules are Shopify's core. Rebuilding them is where custom stores go wrong.
- You sell in many places. Shopify connects your products to marketplaces, social channels and, from its Winter 2026 release, AI assistants like ChatGPT, Copilot and Perplexity through Agentic Storefronts.
- You expect volume. Higher plans lower your card rates, and Shopify's checkout is built for heavy traffic.
- You rely on Shopify apps for reviews, subscriptions, bundles or fulfilment.
When an AI builder sells better for less
- Your "store" is really a service. A photographer selling sessions, a caterer taking deposits, a tutor selling lesson packs, a consultant selling a paid call. These are bookings and payments, not inventory, and Base44 or Lovable build them around how you work.
- You sell digital products. Courses, templates, guides and memberships fit Lovable's built-in payments (Pro plan) or Stripe on Base44.
- You have a handful of products. A small catalogue with simple shipping doesn't need a full commerce platform, provided you test the checkout and shipping rules carefully.
- The purchase is part of a bigger flow. A quote, then approval, then a deposit, then a client area: that's software, and it's what AI builders do best.
The best of both: Lovable + Shopify
Lovable's Shopify integration, launched in October 2025, lets you describe your store, have Lovable design and build the storefront, then claim the store on Shopify and publish it. Shopify handles checkout, payments, subscriptions and taxes. You get a storefront designed from your description rather than a theme, plus the option to add custom landing pages or post-purchase flows, while keeping Shopify's commerce engine. At launch, the integration worked for new Shopify stores only, so check the current setup before connecting an existing one.
This is the clearest example of the future we're betting on: AI-native tools building the experience, on top of proven infrastructure.
The selling-online prompt (services and small catalogues)
Use this on Base44 or Lovable when your business sells services, bookings, deposits or a few products:
Build a website for my business that lets customers buy online. Use only my real details below. Do not invent products, prices, reviews or photos.
ABOUT THE BUSINESS:
[[WHAT YOU DO, WHERE, WHO FOR]]
WHAT CUSTOMERS BUY:
[[e.g. 60-minute session $120; deposit of $200 to book an event date; lesson pack of 10 for $400; 6 printed products with prices]]
HOW BUYING SHOULD WORK:
[[e.g. pick a date, pay a deposit, get a confirmation email; or add to cart and pay]]
SHIPPING (only if you ship physical items):
[[WHERE YOU SHIP AND WHAT IT COSTS]]
AFTER PAYMENT:
Send the customer a confirmation, send me a notification, and save every order in a private orders page that only I can see.
Set up payments in test mode first. List every step of the buying flow so I can test it end to end before going live.
Sell the way your business actually works. If that's services, deposits or digital products, start from your profession's playbook or the online store kit on a free plan. If it's physical products at volume, pair Shopify's engine with a storefront you describe. See the full website builders vs AI builders overview. You can build this.
